Many years ago, Françoise Coriat and I met through a mutual acquaintance from Israel National Radio, and she has remained for me a walking encyclopædia with regard to French culture. In the winter of 2001, she called me to say that she was becoming concerned that a number of songs in her extensive archive were going to be lost with time: she had not managed to locate any written record of the particular versions that she had learned in her childhood — some from one of her grandmothers, and others at school.
As the first volume of The Jill Rogoff Library, I will be presenting the songs that Françoise wished so much to preserve for posterity.
