The Voice of the Wanderer

Traditional Jewish Music from Around the World

Jewish songs from around the world have been a focus of Jill’s research for the past twenty years. This program reflects her journey, from the traditions of such dispersed communities as Poland, Morocco and the Greek island of Rhodes to Yemen, Kurdistan and Israel. Some of the songs are para-liturgical, others entirely secular, including musical settings (some of them Jill’s own) of traditional texts and the poetry of Rabbi Yehuda Halevi and Chaim Nachman Bialik. Singing in Hebrew, Ladino, Yiddish, Arabic and Kurdish, Jill takes her audience on paths of Jewish heritage that they have never trodden before.
